About me!

My name is Felicia Feekes. I grew up in a small town, sheldon, Iowa. I had many friends growing up and loved to play sports. I was involved in volleyball, basketball and track. (I ran hurdles) I was in every sport throughout my four years in high school. I got along well with all my classmates and always loved to have a fun time. My senior year I was in the business club and got to go on a few club trips. Once I graduated from high school in 2009, my plan was to move to Arizona and attend Arizona State University. I got cold feet so I decided I was going to stay in Iowa. My best friend was attending Kirkwood Community College and I wanted to check it out. Once I got there I fell in love with the campus. It reminded me of my high school and knew that I was far away from home but not too far away.

I have always been interested in being an event planner and so once I attended Kirkwood Community College I knew its what I really wanted to get my degree in. I attended Kirkwood for two years and what I say it was the best two years of my life. I loved Kirkwood and I would suggest any and everyone to go there. I worked on campus at Student Life. In our office we planned all the fun things for campus and try to get students involved in things on cmapus. I attended all the events such as movies, games, comedians, ect. I also was involved in two clubs on campus and took on leadership roles while in those clubs the two years that I was there. I also met my boyfriend at Kirkwood in one of the clubs. It is very important to get involved and you never know who you will meet. I had an amazing experience in Cedar Rapids and wouldnt change it for the world.

Next I graduated in May of 2011 from Kirkwood and got accepted to Iowa State University. I started attending in August 2011 to get a bachelors degree in Event Management. I have been attending Iowa State and will be graduating in May 2013. I am involved in Event Management Club and am a peer mentor for the event and hospitality freshmen. I had an internship in Summer 2012 at Des Moines Golf and Country Club. Once I graduate from Iowa State I hope to get a job in Kansas City, Mo with some sports team or a event organization.

I have a black lab puppy that keeps me busy everyday. His name is Tiger. He is just one years old and my boyfriend and I got him together. My boyfriend and I have been dating almost two years. He attends University of Northern Iowa and is going to school to be a PE Teacher.

I cannot wait to see where life takes me after college, I am nervous but really excited about it! :)

Internship

This summer I worked at Des Moines Golf and Country Club. I was their summer interm. While I was there we were split up and put into different parts of the club. I first was assigned to the Grille, which is a casual restaurant. When I worked there I followed the manager for the first week. Then the next two weeks I was a grille server. The last week there I actually did the managers job. After working in the grille, I moved up stairs and worked in banquets. When I was in banquets the same as the grille. I followed the manager in banquets for a week. Then in the next two weeks I was a banquet server. The last week I filled the managers position and did stuff like managers a wedding. Getting everything set up and ready for the wedding. Also helped behind the bar during the wedding and checked ID's. Lastly, the last week working there I worked in their fine dining restaurant. It is called candlelight. In this room, I followed the manager and then the next two weeks was a server. The last week I was the manager and I made food in front of the members. Then I sat them down at their tables and checked them into their reservation. I also presented them with wine and asked how their meal were. It was an overall great experience and I got to see how the club industry works. I didnt get to do much with the event management stuff besides the banquet part but it was such a great summer there! :)

Advice when moving to college

I learned the hard way when coming here, not to just get placed with random roommates. I had a lot of problems my first year here at kirkwood. I thought at first they were fine and i could get along with them but it turns out that they did things that i didn't approve of. So if i could give my advice i would room with people that you have known or know of. Don't just get placed with random people because it could turn out worse than my situations but no one wants to go through roommate problems because its not suppose to be about that, its suppose to be about the education. It sucks when you have to go through things like that and dealing with drama is no fun at all. So if you know of someone that is going to the same college as you, you should consider living with them. Others are just lucky though because they get placed with someone and they end up being their best friend and friend for life. Like one of my roommates i will definitely be friends with her for the rest of my life. Also like people say its not good to live with your best friend from high school, because you wont be best friends anymore. well my case was different, my best friend and i lived together last year and we are still best friends. We are actually even closer. So when choosing your roommates choose wisely! :)
